The ‘This is Me’ project was a collaboration between Cathays Community Centre & Cathays-based St Monica’s Primary School.

After meeting with staff at the school and doing some brainstorming, it was decided that we would come up with a way for the young people of St Monica’s Primary School to express how proud they were of themselves & their various cultures.

The end result was a fantastic, multi- faceted one day event, in which the year 6 pupils joined the staff of Cathays at Cathays Community Centre to have input in their lyrics and the recording of their vocals, play and record themselves playing various drums, and learn some Afro Centric dance moves from our talented musical staff.

On top of this, the children had the opportunity to try various other musical instruments such and guitars and keyboards while they were waiting for their turn to get into the recording booth.

The children were split into 3 groups, rotating across lyrics/vocal recording, drum playing/recording, and dance rehearsal.

At the end of the day, we brought all of the groups together to practice and perform together.

We have since received brilliant feedback from the school & its pupils about the event, with many of the pupils joining us at our afterschool club, with more clubs such as a choir group potentially on the cards as well.

The finished song is being produced and put together by Music Project Manager, Tyrone, as well the day being recorded and edited into a music video to go along with it.
