Christina Witney, Community Development Manager

At the start of this year, we welcomed a new member to our staff team, taking on the role of Development Manager at Cathays. Christina Whitney (She/They) will be overseeing the development of the small projects at our centre.

With this responsibility, Christina is aiming to increase fundraising for these projects and make links among the local community and to “see how we can work together and identify where the gaps are”. A sense of community is at the heart of Cathays Community Centre, so understanding what the people we work with might need and working with those local to us to develop in those gaps is extremely important.

We hope this is getting people excited for what’s to come in this new role.

With a long history of retail and hospitality experience, Christina is familiar with high paced working environment of many moving parts. But Christinas most recent job has been working with young people who are suffering with their mental health. With the perspective that we should “use the voice of those affected”, Christina has been an advocate for ensuring there is growth, development and understanding for young people. It has been important throughout her career that Christina has been a voice for people. Christinas experiences have given her the awareness surrounding the wider world and supporting local communities.

As our new Development Manager, Christina is responsible for the growth of our projects at Cathays Community Centre. Projects such as memory lane, and coffee morning, we are wanting an increase of people, and we want to grow awareness of the community fridge also. Establishing a team for our community fridge that will keep it moving smoothly is so important to Christina. When she started this role, it became very clear that “the fridge can be full in the morning and by 2 o’clock it can be empty again”; but already Christina has increased the visibility of this amazing project, and we are so happy she is a part of our team.

Since Christina has taken over this position, we have had an increase in memberships at our Memory Lane projects, which is something she had intended to achieve. Christina has said “Coffee Morning continues to be a lovely space to engage with lovely people, although it would be nice to see some new faces too!”; so, if you are interested in joining our lovely sober social on a Wednesday, all are welcome.

Christina has a passion for LGBTQ+ activism, she enjoys Roller Skating, and she will always aim to “make time for [her] own community by socialising with [her] friends”. The significant role that Christina has had whilst working within our community has made such a positive impact. Notably Christina has “been doing some work with Cardiff University around community safety in Cathays and sober activities and we are working with The Business School about the socioeconomic value of spaces like ours.”.
